Abstract
Gastrointestinal bleeding has been shown to be a common problem which carries a significant risk of mortality after renal transplantation. In a retrospective review of 945 consecutive renal transplants, we found an incidence of 2.6% with a
mortality
rate of 20%. The single most important risk factor affecting the occurrence of gastrointestinla bleeding was prior episode of acute anti-rejection therapy, and also the single most important risk factor affecting mortality after gastrointestinal
bleeding was time interval after transplantation.
@ES In conclusion:
@EN 1) Prophylactic medical or surgical control of any ulcerogenic tendency should be carried out in the pre-transplant period
2) Prolonged intensive anti-ulcer prophylaxis including ranitidine might be recommended in high risk patients during early transplant period or patients with recent anti-rejection treatment to prevent bleeding.
3) We have to pay attention to the possiblity of gastric cancer during the evaluation of bleeding patients.
